Sample Morning Schedule
| Approximate time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 5:30–6:00 am | Pickup from your Nairobi hotel or agreed meeting point |
| From 6:00 am | Park entry and morning game drive |
| During the drive | Wildlife viewing and permitted photography stops |
| Late morning | Leave the park and return to your pickup point |
The schedule depends on your pickup location, traffic and park entry arrangements. We will confirm your departure and expected return times before the tour.
Prefer an afternoon drive? Tell us your date and we will check availability. The park’s general gate hours are 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, so an afternoon departure must allow enough time to complete the drive and leave before closing.
Where Is Nairobi National Park?
Nairobi National Park is on the southern side of Nairobi, a short drive from the city centre. The exact journey time depends on your hotel, traffic and the entrance used for your tour.
Established in 1946 as Kenya’s first national park, it covers approximately 117 square kilometres. Its setting makes it especially appealing to visitors who want to see wildlife while staying in Nairobi: sections of the city skyline are visible beyond the savannah.
What Animals Can You See in Nairobi National Park?
Nairobi National Park is particularly known as a rhino sanctuary. Wildlife found in the park includes:
- Black and white rhinos
- Lions and buffaloes
- Giraffes and zebras
- Antelopes and hartebeests
- Hyenas
- Hippos and crocodiles around suitable water habitats
- A wide variety of birds
Leopards and cheetahs may occur in the park, but they are difficult to see and should not be expected on a short tour. There are no resident elephants. This means four of the traditional Big Five species are associated with the park: lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo.
No guide can promise a particular sighting. If elephants are a priority for your trip, ask us about an Amboseli or Tsavo safari.
Places of Interest Inside the Park
A Nairobi National Park game drive is primarily about wildlife viewing, but the park also has notable landscapes and landmarks:
- Open savannah: Grassland where you may see grazing animals and, in the distance, Nairobi’s skyline.
- Ivory Burning Site: A landmark associated with Kenya’s conservation history.
- Hippo Pools area: A part of the park associated with the Mbagathi River and a designated walking trail.
Stops at particular sites are subject to time, route, conditions and park rules. The Hippo Pools walking trail is not automatically part of this half-day vehicle safari. Ask us in advance if visiting a specific site matters to you.
Nairobi National Park Tickets and Entry Fees
If you book this safari with us, park entry is included in your confirmed package price. We will arrange the entry requirements for the guests on your booking. Please give us each guest’s correct citizenship or residency category and bring the relevant ID or passport on the day.
If you are visiting independently, you can check park information and arrange entry through the official Kenya Wildlife Service and its KWS eCitizen payment platform. These are park entry charges only; they do not include our private vehicle, guide and transfers.
Published Nairobi National Park Entry Fees
| Visitor category | Adult | Child/student |
|---|---|---|
| East African citizen | KES 1,000 | KES 500 |
| Kenya resident | KES 1,350 | KES 675 |
| Non-resident | USD 80 | USD 40 |
| African citizen | USD 40 | USD 20 |
These are the published KWS park entry categories for reference. They are already included where applicable in our confirmed safari package. Check the current KWS tariff before travelling independently; eligibility and identification requirements apply.
Park Hours and Visitor Guidelines
Nairobi National Park’s general gate hours are 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. We recommend an early departure for a half-day safari, particularly if you want cooler temperatures and good morning light.
During your visit, follow your guide’s instructions and KWS park rules. Stay in the vehicle except at designated areas, keep a respectful distance from wildlife, do not feed animals, and take your litter with you. Single-use plastics are prohibited in KWS parks.
Is a Half-Day Nairobi National Park Safari Worth It?
A half-day game drive is a good fit when you want to experience a Kenyan national park without leaving Nairobi for an overnight trip. It gives you time for a guided wildlife drive while leaving the rest of your day free.
Choose a full-day tour if you would like a longer game drive or want to add other Nairobi attractions. The Giraffe Centre, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Nairobi Safari Walk are separate experiences, with their own schedules and entry arrangements. Tell us what you would like to see and we can prepare a combined itinerary.
Where to Stay for a Nairobi National Park Tour
You do not need to stay inside or beside the park. We can plan your pickup around a hotel or agreed location in Nairobi.
If you are choosing accommodation specifically for an early game drive, tell us your arrival point and onward plans. We can advise on a convenient area to stay and a sensible pickup time. Accommodation is not included in this half-day safari price.
What Should You Bring?
Bring the ID or passport matching the details supplied for park entry. We also recommend a light jacket for the early morning, comfortable clothing, sunscreen, a camera and binoculars if you have them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a Nairobi National Park safari?
Our private half-day safari costs USD 320 for one guest, USD 200 per person for two, USD 140 per person for four, or USD 120 per person for six. The prices include Nairobi National Park entry for the guests on the confirmed booking.
Do I need to buy Nairobi National Park tickets separately?
No, not for this package. Park entry is included in your confirmed safari price. If you are visiting without booking our tour, arrange your own entry through the official KWS system.
How long is the game drive?
The overall half-day tour takes approximately 4–5 hours including transfers. Your time inside the park varies with traffic, your pickup point and entry arrangements.
Is the safari private?
Yes. Your group has a private Land Cruiser and driver-guide. The maximum vehicle capacity is six guests.
What is the best time for a Nairobi National Park game drive?
We recommend an early morning departure. The cooler hours can be comfortable for game viewing, and the morning light is often good for photographs. Wildlife sightings vary at every time of day.
Can you see the Big Five in Nairobi National Park?
The park is associated with lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo, but not elephants. Leopards are particularly difficult to spot, so a half-day visit should not be sold as a guaranteed Big Five experience.
Can we visit the Hippo Pools or Ivory Burning Site?
Tell us when booking if either is a priority. Whether a stop fits into your half-day safari depends on the route, available time and conditions. A walk at Hippo Pools is not included automatically.
Can we combine the park with the Giraffe Centre or Sheldrick Wildlife Trust?
Yes, subject to availability and the attractions’ booking requirements. Ask for a full-day Nairobi tour quote; these additional visits are not included in the half-day price above.
Book Your Nairobi National Park Safari

Tour Plan
Your safari adventure begins bright and early. We’ll pick you up from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in a private 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-top roof for perfect viewing.
As the city still sleeps, you’ll drive through the cool morning air toward Nairobi National Park, the only wildlife reserve in the world bordering a capital city.
The gates open just as the sun rises — and that’s when the park is most alive. Predators are still on the move, herds of antelope are grazing in the soft morning light, and the air carries that crisp scent of the African bush.
Your expert driver-guide knows the best spots to find wildlife, from the open grass plains to the forested riverbanks of the Mbagathi River. Look out for:
- Lions resting after a night’s hunt
- Black rhinos browsing among acacia trees
- Giraffes silhouetted against the Nairobi skyline
- Buffalo, zebras, eland, ostriches, and over 400 species of birds
You’ll stop at key landmarks like the Ivory Burning Monument, where Kenya destroyed its ivory stockpiles as a powerful stand against poaching, and the Hippo Pool Trail, where you can stretch your legs and sometimes spot hippos or crocodiles in the water.
The beauty of Nairobi National Park lies in its contrast — wild nature thriving beside modern skyscrapers. It’s a reminder that conservation can coexist with urban life, and nowhere else in the world is this harmony so evident.
After your morning safari, we’ll continue to the Giraffe Centre in Lang’ata — one of Nairobi’s most beloved attractions and a cornerstone of Kenya’s conservation story.
Here, you’ll meet the endangered Rothschild giraffes, a species once on the brink of extinction. The center, run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), was founded in 1979 by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, whose passion for wildlife led to the rescue and breeding of these majestic animals.
At the Giraffe Centre, you can:
- Feed the giraffes from a raised observation platform, allowing for face-to-face interaction
- Learn about giraffe conservation and the breeding program that has reintroduced Rothschilds into Kenya’s protected areas
- Walk along the nature trail through the nearby Gogo River sanctuary, a peaceful path lined with indigenous trees and birds
It’s an unforgettable moment — feeling the soft brush of a giraffe’s tongue as it takes a pellet from your hand, or watching children light up with laughter as these gentle giants lean down to greet them.
The center’s educational programs also support conservation awareness among local communities, ensuring that Kenya’s wildlife heritage is cherished for generations to come.
Just a short drive from the Giraffe Centre lies another incredible conservation initiative — the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, often referred to as the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage.
Founded in 1977 by Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick in memory of her husband David, this world-renowned sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates orphaned elephants and rhinos whose mothers were lost to poaching, drought, or human-wildlife conflict.
The public visiting hour (11:00 AM to 12:00 PM) is one of the most heartwarming experiences in Nairobi. During this time, the young elephants — some only a few months old — are brought out for their morning milk feed. They tumble, play in the mud, and interact freely under the watchful care of their keepers.
Each orphan has a story, and hearing how they were rescued and nurtured back to health gives deep meaning to Kenya’s conservation work. Eventually, when they are strong and independent, the elephants are reintroduced into the wild — often in Tsavo National Park, where they live out full, free lives.
Visitors can also adopt an elephant through the Sheldrick Trust’s fostering program, contributing directly to its ongoing mission of wildlife protection.
Important: The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust requires advance booking through their official website. Slots are limited and sell out early, so pre-booking is essential.
After your morning of wildlife encounters, you can relax with lunch at one of the charming restaurants nearby.
Popular options include:
- The Talisman – a stylish garden restaurant known for fusion cuisine
- Cultiva Farm Kenya – an eco-conscious eatery serving farm-to-table meals
- Karen Blixen Coffee Garden – set in the historic estate of the famous Danish author
This is a great way to unwind, share stories from your morning, and enjoy Nairobi’s green, leafy suburbs before heading back.
By early afternoon, you’ll be back at your hotel or the airport — refreshed, inspired, and with a new appreciation for Nairobi as one of the world’s most unique wildlife capitals.

David handled almost every detail of my first Africa trip. He acted super quickly, got me a great price and made excellent recommendations that were clearly based on years of practical experience and firsthand knowledge. He didn’t abandon me once booked, however, as many operators do. He stayed in constant communication and updated me constantly. He checked in a lot. He even sent his amazing colleague to meet me at the Nairobi airport at 6:30 AM to make sure we got on our flight. That’s something I’ve never seen before. Hire David immediately if you are traveling, trust me. And his prices were the same or better than you could find on your own.Posted on Google![]()

These is one of the well organized holidays I have had in a while. I live in the diaspora and I normally arrange everything by myself flight, hotel booking, transportation to and fro. With the holiday dealers everything was taken care of all I had to do is say where I wanted to go and for how long and everything is taken care of. This has been one stress free holiday and I definitely recommend them especially if you are not in the country. I will definitely use them again for my next trip.Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Safari Experience with Joseph Ndungu and Holiday Dealers. Our family spent three wonderful days on safari in Amboseli with Joseph Ndungu as our driver and guide, and the experience exceeded all expectations. From the moment he picked us up in Nairobi, everything was perfectly organized. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and well equipped, and Joseph made us feel welcome right away. Throughout the entire journey, Joseph drove with exceptional care, professionalism, and attention, so we always felt completely safe. Even before entering the park, he introduced us to Kenya’s wildlife by pointing out animals along the roadside and sharing fascinating insights. He also clearly explained the itinerary and shared his extensive knowledge about the park, its ecosystems, and its wildlife. Thanks to his experience and communication with other guides, we saw an incredible variety of animals in excellent locations. What made the experience truly special was his deep appreciation for Kenya’s wildlife, which he shared with us in an heartfelt way. With the help of field guides, he explained animal behaviour and ecology in a way that was engaging for both adults and children. Joseph also showed genuine care for our family and created memorable moments. When the clouds cleared and Mount Kilimanjaro became visible, he proactively suggested taking family photos and kindly took them for us, giving us lasting memories of this special moment. Joseph was not only an outstanding guide but also a wonderful travel companion. We highly recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, professional, and safe safari guide. Our thanks also go to Holiday Dealers for a perfectly organized and unforgettable safari. ★★★★★Posted on Google![]()
