Lake Nakuru National Park is approximately 156 kilometres northwest of Nairobi, about a three-hour drive under normal traffic conditions. The compact park covers around 188 square kilometres, making it ideal for a day trip or a one-night or two-night safari from Nairobi.
The park is one of Kenya’s leading sanctuaries for black and white rhinos and is also home to Rothschild’s giraffes, lions, leopards, buffaloes and more than 400 recorded bird species. Its varied scenery includes Lake Nakuru, yellow-barked acacia woodland, rocky escarpments and viewpoints such as Baboon Cliff.
Flamingo numbers vary with changing lake conditions, but pelicans and many other waterbirds are regularly seen. Most travellers choose a two-day or three-day private road safari to enjoy the park without rushing.
A Lake Nakuru safari from Nairobi is one of the best options for a quick one-night or two-night wildlife break. Lake Nakuru National Park is easily accessible by road and offers excellent opportunities to see rhinos, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, leopards and abundant birdlife.

Best Time for a Lake Nakuru Safari
Lake Nakuru National Park can be visited throughout the year.
The drier months generally make wildlife easier to spot because animals gather around water sources and the vegetation is less dense. The wetter months bring greener scenery, fewer visitors and excellent birdwatching.
Wildlife sightings vary naturally, but rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and antelopes can be seen throughout the year.
Can I See Flamingos at Lake Nakuru?
Flamingos can still be seen at Lake Nakuru, but their numbers change according to water levels and food availability. They may move between Lake Nakuru, Lake Bogoria and other Rift Valley lakes.
Lake Nakuru should therefore be booked as a complete wildlife destination rather than solely for flamingos. Its rhinos, giraffes, predators, birdlife and Rift Valley scenery make the park worthwhile even when flamingo numbers are lower.
Can Lake Nakuru Be Combined with Other Destinations?
Yes. Lake Nakuru can be combined with:
- Lake Naivasha
- Hell’s Gate National Park
- Lake Elementaita
- Masai Mara National Reserve
- Ol Pejeta Conservancy
- Amboseli National Park
A popular short itinerary combines Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. Travellers continuing on a longer safari can also visit Lake Nakuru between Nairobi and the Masai Mara.

David handled almost every detail of my first Africa trip. He acted super quickly, got me a great price and made excellent recommendations that were clearly based on years of practical experience and firsthand knowledge. He didn’t abandon me once booked, however, as many operators do. He stayed in constant communication and updated me constantly. He checked in a lot. He even sent his amazing colleague to meet me at the Nairobi airport at 6:30 AM to make sure we got on our flight. That’s something I’ve never seen before. Hire David immediately if you are traveling, trust me. And his prices were the same or better than you could find on your own.Posted on Google![]()

These is one of the well organized holidays I have had in a while. I live in the diaspora and I normally arrange everything by myself flight, hotel booking, transportation to and fro. With the holiday dealers everything was taken care of all I had to do is say where I wanted to go and for how long and everything is taken care of. This has been one stress free holiday and I definitely recommend them especially if you are not in the country. I will definitely use them again for my next trip.Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Safari Experience with Joseph Ndungu and Holiday Dealers. Our family spent three wonderful days on safari in Amboseli with Joseph Ndungu as our driver and guide, and the experience exceeded all expectations. From the moment he picked us up in Nairobi, everything was perfectly organized. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and well equipped, and Joseph made us feel welcome right away. Throughout the entire journey, Joseph drove with exceptional care, professionalism, and attention, so we always felt completely safe. Even before entering the park, he introduced us to Kenya’s wildlife by pointing out animals along the roadside and sharing fascinating insights. He also clearly explained the itinerary and shared his extensive knowledge about the park, its ecosystems, and its wildlife. Thanks to his experience and communication with other guides, we saw an incredible variety of animals in excellent locations. What made the experience truly special was his deep appreciation for Kenya’s wildlife, which he shared with us in an heartfelt way. With the help of field guides, he explained animal behaviour and ecology in a way that was engaging for both adults and children. Joseph also showed genuine care for our family and created memorable moments. When the clouds cleared and Mount Kilimanjaro became visible, he proactively suggested taking family photos and kindly took them for us, giving us lasting memories of this special moment. Joseph was not only an outstanding guide but also a wonderful travel companion. We highly recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, professional, and safe safari guide. Our thanks also go to Holiday Dealers for a perfectly organized and unforgettable safari. ★★★★★Posted on Google![]()
